The Gardens with their magnificent species trees, most notably the lines of Wellingtonias, were laid out by Captain William Fordyce Blair and his father, who were both collectors of plants of note. The Bombo was diverted to create form and interest and was dug and walled by Prisoners of Wars from the Napoleonic Wars.
